‘A THOUSAND HOUSES’

This tapestry is inspired by traditional millefleurs, or thousand flower tapestries. Here, a thousand houses reflect the range of Californian bungalows, post-war red-brick homes, McMansions and verandah houses that characterise Australia’s urban landscape.

They are abstract from afar and detailed up close. From a distance, the tapestry is geometric and graphic. Yet, on approach, the houses reveal their quirks and familiar architectural features.

The tapestry employs a monochromatic palette which celebrates the distinctive textures of silk and wool. The background is black, tactile wool, while the houses are woven in white silk, which glints and glows in the light.
